Description of Team Levels
Developmental Teams
Our developmental teams feed into our competitive programs. It is our goal during the pre-team/prep-team levels to build the strength (mental and physical), flexibility and discipline needed for a competitive athlete during these levels. When our coaches feel your child is ready, they will move them into either our USAG DP, USAG XCEL or NGA programs.
Non-competitive levels
All competitive teams compete in local and travel competitions throughout the year. Their routines are based on guidelines given by the National Gymnastics Committee. All teams train on all four apparatuses and require dance training.

Difference between NGA, DP and XCEL
- The USAG DP (Developmental Program) competitive program uses a level system ranging from Level 1 to Level 10. This program is geared for Division 1 Colleges/Universities. Levels 1 through 5 compete using compulsory routines, meaning all gymnasts from around the United States compete with the same routines. When the gymnast reaches Level 6 for girls, they (their coaches) choose their own routines and music. These are commonly referred to as “optional.” Each level has a list of skills to choose from that must be included in the routines. The DP program, by design, is highly competitive and time consuming. There are no allowances for missed practices and the financial obligation tends to be higher. The DP program requires specific body lines and strength to maintain the high level of skill expected to be competitive in Florida.
- The USAG XCEL is a college bound competitive program that has six levels. All levels are optional allowing athletes of all levels more flexibility and individuality in their routines. The USAG XCEL program with lower recommended practice hours is designed to give children an opportunity to compete that do not have a lot of time or resources due to school or other sport activities.
- The NGA is a recreational competitive program that has ten levels. All levels are optional allowing athletes of all levels more flexibility and individuality in their routines. NGA is the only program at Coastal Dreams in which all practices and competitions are not required.
